WHO WE ARE

MAGIC Programs (Mobilization for Adolescent Growth In our Communities) San Francisco

MAGIC Programs consists of two programs: Mo’ MAGIC and BMAGIC, and is a collaborative of San Francisco neighborhood-based nonprofit organizations, community residents, faith-based organizations, city and county agencies, schools, and other stakeholders whose mission is to transform the community and youth through the MAGIC of collaboration.

MAGIC Programs envisions communities where all children and families have the same opportunities to learn, play, work, and live joyful and productive lives, with a criminal justice system and public institutions that work for them, not against them.

OUR HISTORY

Formed to Serve SF

The MAGIC Programs initiative was initially founded by Jeff Adachi in 2004 in Bayview Hunters Point by the Office of the Public Defender in response to a community-identified need to address the impact of trauma, poverty, and violence on children and youth in targeted San Francisco districts. In 2006, the program grew to serve the Fillmore District/Western Addition communities with the expanded mission to facilitate, coordinate, and develop community resources that support service providers.

MAGIC Programs’ Collaborative has formed meaningful partnerships between community residents, faith-based organizations, city and county agencies, nonprofit organizations, schools, and other stakeholders. It brings together an array of community-based service providers to plan year-round activities with the goals of:

  • building a strong community bond, 
  • decreasing violence in the community, and 
  • disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline.

MAGIC Programs has convened more than 60 service providers and created meaningful and lasting opportunities for Fillmore/Western Addition and Bayview Hunters Point youth to grow, succeed, and achieve. Together we serve over 2,500 children, youth, and their families annually.

Our Leadership

Brittany Ford

Executive Director

Brittany Ford was named Executive Director of the MAGIC Programs (B’MAGIC & Mo’MAGIC) in September 2022. Previously she was the Director of the Mo’MAGIC community collaborative for three years, before the programs merged. Brittany is passionate about making Fillmore and Bayview Hunter’s Point Districts a safe place with excellent opportunities for youth and their families. She has been part of the Collective Impact team since 2014, and previously served as Magic Zone Middle School Lead, where she managed all aspects of programming for grades 6 to 8; she also took on the role of Finance & Operations Assistant, providing administrative support for the organization. Brittany graduated from California State University, Northridge in 2012 with a B.A. in Journalism, with an emphasis in Public Relations. She has served as a Community Advocate for the Community Youth Center of San Francisco, instructing community safety workshops in the Western Addition, and as an Educational Advisor for PACT Inc. Brittany, born and raised in Oakland, enjoys spending her free time with friends and family.

Moira Dumo Rios

Associate Director

Moira Dumo Rios is a San Francisco native, alumni of Phillip & Sala Burton Academic High School, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Central State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. In her previous roles as BMAGIC’s Program Coordinator and Community Outreach & Program Assistant, Moira assisted with the planning and coordination of BMAGIC’s Literacy is Freedom Book Fair, Back to School Celebration & Backpack Giveaway, Bayview Hunters Point National Night Out, and the production of the bi-annual BMAGIC Resource Guide. Named MAGIC’s Associate Director in September 2022, Moira looks forward to continuing her support and collaboration with all of the organizations, agencies, and schools that strengthen and serve Bayview Hunters Point and Fillmore children, youth, and families.

Nayansey Curiel

Administrative
Coordinator

Nayansey Curiel, is first generation born and raised San Franciscan, in what she likes to call the heart of many different neighborhoods. She graduated from School of the Arts High School and attends City College of San Francisco to pursue Paralegal Studies. She is a proud mother of two. Nayansey, has worked with children her whole life, before becoming most recently employed at Don’s Auto Body SF as administrative assistant and later front office manager. In her new role as administrative coordinator, Nayansey has looked forward to serving, working, helping and building relationships along with all organizations in the community to support the youth in the Western Addition.

Vanessa Soriano

Community Outreach &
Program Assistant

Vanessa was raised in the heart of California’s Central Valley where she has always had the desire to work in a big city and be around lots of individuals from different backgrounds. She has worked as a former babysitter to family members and a trainer to older teens in Food Service. Past experiences witnessing systematic injustice have strengthened the belief that all people, especially children, deserve chances to a proper education and option for social mobility. By working with Mo’MAGIC, she hopes to be able to assist in developing opportunities for local community members to pave the way for their own success.

Kayla Kunze

Community Outreach &
Program Assistant

Kayla Kunze is a native of San Francisco, growing up and having family and friends residing in the Western Addition. She is a proud graduate of City College of San Francisco with an Associate of Science in Administration of Criminal Justice, and currently working to obtain her Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice. Kayla also interned at the Northern California service league within San Francisco’s Hall Justice providing services to people in jail, their families and friends. She later worked for the Public Defender’s main office at the front desk reception for 3 years. She is excited to be back with the Public Defender’s office working within the Bayview Hunters Point community and support those in need.

Vernon Haney III, Program Coordinator, MAGIC-SF

Vernon HANEY III

Program Coordinator

Before joining BMAGIC, Vernon worked for several leading City agencies and nonprofits such as Walk SF and San Francisco’s Department of the Environment. During his time there, he gained extensive experience in community advocacy, engagement, and organizing and developed a passion for the environment and building community. Residing in San Francisco for the past 15 years, he has become an advocate for San Francisco using his voice to encourage and empower community members, schools, and businesses to work together to make the City better for all of us. Vernon is known for his strong leadership qualities, practical communication skills, and ability to collaborate with diverse groups of individuals. Outside of work, Vernon is an avid reader who enjoys exploring new ideas, shooting pool, and volunteering with various Bay Area organizations to improve access to resources for underserved communities, students, and families.

Manohar Raju

San Francisco Public
Defender

Manohar Raju is the San Francisco Public Defender and a founding member of Public Defenders for Racial Justice.
A son of immigrants from India, his pursuit of justice is rooted in his acute awareness of the ramifications of social inequalities. Despite coming from a farming village, his parents managed to emigrate to America, where they raised Mano on the East Coast.
Mr. Raju completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, and holds a Master’s degree in South Asian Studies from U.C. Berkeley, where he also earned his law degree. He worked as a Deputy Public Defender in Contra Costa County for seven years before he was recruited by Jeff Adachi to join the SF Public Defender’s felony unit in 2008. Due to his impressive practice as a felony line attorney, he was promoted to be the Director of Training and then Manager of the Felony Unit.
Mr. Raju is deeply committed to a client-centered approach to defense work. “Our impact is not measured in numbers, but in the people we represent,” he said. “It’s by the mother who can return home to her family. The son who can continue to work to support his family. And to the children of those we defend, who benefit from having an equal opportunity to survive and who might one day use that opportunity to lead.”
The personal interest he takes in his clients’ lives helps fuel him not only to fiercely litigate and win cases, but also to raise his voice against the inequities he and his clients encounter in the criminal justice system. It has earned him the loyalty of his entire Department and the confidence of Mayor London Breed, who appointed him to fill the post in March 2019. As Public Defender, Mano will continue to uphold the office’s reputation not only as a formidable group of lawyers, but also as a catalyst for criminal justice reform.
